Every plant store has a pet- whether it's a bird, a dog, or 13 axolotls! Axolotls are my passion and I love teaching about them, raising them, and finding them the perfect homes.
The internet is super misleading about axolotl care. As someone who's had everything from guinea pigs to geckos, axolotls are some of the most low maintenance and relaxing pets I've ever cared for. No, they do not hate light. No, they are not easily stressed or frightened.

They actually find people really entertaining, even loud or hyper kids. They watch people like we're their TV! Benny, our ambassador axolotl, watches over pretty much every workshop at the shop. He does a little head tilt to get a better view when people approach him. What a cutie!
Really, axolotls just need a filter, dechlorinator drops for their water, occasional debris clean up, and a bunch of aquarium plants thrown in to keep the water clean. Axolotls love climbing the plants and doing weird yoga poses. They're so fun to watch!

Our 12 baby axolotls are ready for new homes — and they're ridiculously cute. For $60, you can bring home a 5-month-old, friendly, silly little wild type axolotl that’s already trained to eat pellets (no messy worms required!).
You can visit them any time during shop hours — Tuesday–Saturday 1–7, and Sunday 1–5. Kids are welcome, too!

Here’s what comes with your axolotl:
- A cycled sponge filter (so you don’t have to wait weeks for your tank to cycle!)
- A starter bundle of live plants: anachris, java moss, ambulia, and java fern
- A mini bag of axolotl pellets to get you through the first week
What you’ll need:
🌊 A 10+ gallon tank without any fish (you can grab one cheap on Facebook Marketplace!)
🏝️ CaribSea Supernaturals sand from Petco or Amazon (this specific sand is safe for their tummies — gravel and coarse sand are dangerous to Axolotls) OR a few 2 inch or larger river stones
💧 A siphon, bottle of dechlorinator, algae scraper, and aquarium air pump (easy to find at Petco or on Amazon)
🪣 A 1-gallon bucket or watering can to make water changes super simple
🌞 A plant light (Sansi clip-on grow lights are usually $15 on Amazon and have timers built in)

Why axolotls?
🎂 They live 10–15 years, so they’ll be part of the family. It's like having a dog or cat, but without the mess or allergies.
🐉 Axolotls stay underwater and grow to about the size of a plastic water bottle. It's like having a little dragon in an aquarium!
🏄 Axolotls don’t need to live together. They're fine going solo.
🏖️ Axolotls are super easy to give instructions for if you go on vacation.
👍 Their care is EASY: just scrape algae and siphon up debris about once a week. Feed them pellets every day or two.
🥰 They’re silly, weird, and endlessly fun to watch.

By the time your axolotl is about a year and a half old, they’ll need a 3-foot (30 gallon) tank or larger (also easy to find on Marketplace) and a stronger filter to add alongside their sponge filter.
If you want more than one axolotl, they’ll need to live separately for a few months, until they're old enough to tell what gender they are.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect pet, axolotls could be an amazing fit! I'm happy to answer any of your questions. Brighten each and every day with a little aquatic buddy. I can tell you, from experience, axolotls will bring you plenty of laughs and smiles.
My axolotl, Benny, has brought me so much joy, helping me through some of the scariest and most stressful times of my life, with the power of his silly face and ridiculous antics. That's why I raise axolotls and he'll then find new homes. Come meet the babies at Easy Little Plants and see for yourself.
